Now that the second half of the baseball season is underway, we are getting a better idea as to which teams are legitimate and those likely to fall back in the standings. Today’s action will help separate the serious contenders from the rest. In particular, the Brewers and Cubs will square off in a pivotal matchup at Miller Park. The Cards and Astros will also do battle while the Yankees and Red Sox are sure to entertain at Fenway.
Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers O/U 9.5
The Brewers have rebounded quite nicely after losing a couple key players to injury. The Brew Crew will send Zach Davies to the hill. Parx has Davies as a slight favorite as his numbers are eye-popping to say the least: a 3.17 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP and an 8-3 record. However, Davies was rocked for six earned runs in his last outing, a 14-6 loss to the Reds. Jose Quintana has been a bit shaky for the Cubs in his last few outings. The Brewers should continue their winning ways with a home victory over the Cubs.
Pick: Brewers moneyline -114
Houston Astros at St. Louis Cardinals O/U 9
|St. Louis Cardinals||+112|
Take a look at Wade Miley and Dakota Hudson’s numbers and you will be taken aback by just how good these pitchers have been. Miley’s ERA is hovering around 3.00 while his WHIP is right around 1.00. Hudson also has solid numbers yet the Astros are clearly the better team. This game should go under partially because the Astros have a few injuries and neither team’s lineup has seen the opposing pitcher lately.
Pick: Under 9
Texas Rangers at Oakland A’s O/U 9.5
Pedro Payano has impressed in his brief MLB stint. The righty from New York City made it through five innings throwing a mere 78 pitches the last time he took the hill, a 7-2 victory against the Mariners. Mike Fiers has made it through at least six innings in nearly every start this season. Though Fiers is not exactly a strikeout machine, he is good enough to beat the Rangers at home on the weekend. This is precisely why Parx has Fiers’ A’s as hefty favorites. If you absolutely have to have money on the line in this one, consider taking the under.
Pick: Under 9.5
New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox O/U 10.5
|New York Yankees||+150|
|Boston Red Sox||-186|
The Yankees are sliding, primarily because their pitching has been a major letdown across the past week. Things won’t get any easier later today when Chris Sale pitches for Boston. The question is whether Domingo German can regain his early season form. German is too good of a pitcher to melt down in two consecutive games. Sale is electric enough to keep the Yankees’ bats in check. This one should go under Parx’s run total of 10.5.
Pick: Under 10.5
