It looks like most of the country will have clear skies for tonight’s baseball action. We are getting down to the nitty-gritty with less than 40 games to go. The Braves will take on the seemingly unbeatable Hyun-Jin Ryu in an intriguing matchup at SunTrust Park. The Tigers and Rays will do battle in Tampa in a battle between two soft-tossing pitchers in Ryan Yarbrough and Jordan Zimmermann. Below, we peer into the crystal ball and take a look at what is likely to transpire on diamonds across America this evening.
Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves O/U 10
|Los Angeles Dodgers||-155|
Parx has the Dodgers listed as favorites tonight as they clearly have the edge in the pitching matchup between Hyun-Jin Ryu and Mike Foltynewicz. Ryu’s stuff is borderline un-hittable at the moment. However, the Braves have more than enough right-handed power to take Ryu deep a couple times. The question begs: can Mike Foltynewicz keep the Dodgers’ bats in check? Foltynewicz has a 4-5 record with a 6.24 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. The righty from Sterling, IL has 64 Ks in 70.2 innings pitched. However, Ryu is due for a letdown. It just might happen on the road in a Saturday night matchup against one of the best lineups in the big leagues.
Pick: Braves moneyline
Minnesota Twins at Texas Rangers O/U 11
Do not feel bad if you do not know who Jose Berrios and Ariel Jurado are. Even some veteran baseball gamblers will struggle to sort through the cobwebs to identify these pitchers. One would think a matchup between two relatively unknown tossers on teams with stellar lineups would lead to an over/under run total in excess of the 11 runs expected by Parx. However, both teams are dealing with injuries at the moment so it is not exactly prudent to bet the farm on the over. A small play on the over will suffice.
Pick: Over 11
Miami Marlins at Colorado Rockies O/U 12
German Marquez has an enviable 1.19 WHIP yet his ERA is just under five. In other words, Marquez is not allowing an abundance of hits and walks yet he is surrendering plenty of runs. This means Marquez is allowing a ton of home runs and hits at the worst possible moments. Thankfully, the woeful Marlins will come to town this evening, led by Hector Noesi. Noesi has allowed five earned runs in each of his last two starts. Noesi lost to the Mets and Marlins in those outings. Things will not get any easier this time around against a Rockies’ lineup with an abundance of power. Making matters worse for Noesi and the Marlins is the fact that this is a Saturday night tilt on the road.
Pick: Rockies moneyline
Detroit Tigers at Tampa Bay Rays O/U 8.5
|Tampa Bay Rays||-315|
Jordan Zimmermann has not pitched since August 4 when he surrendered four earned runs in six innings pitched against the Rangers. Zimmermann is 1-8 with a 7.13 ERA. He has not made it beyond the six inning mark since his first two outings of the season. Zimmermann will likely struggle against the 71-51 Rays this evening. Fantasy baseball players have caught wind of Ryan Yarbrough for good reason: the light-tossing lefty has 11 wins, a WHIP below one and a 3.56 ERA. Those are solid stats for a first-year pitcher. Yarbrough was one out short of going the distance in his last outing, a 1-0 victory against the Mariners. Yarbrough typically allows two runs or less yet the law of averages states he is due to get rocked. The Tigers just might be able to put up four runs, helping this matchup hit the over of 8.5 as set by Parx.
Pick: Over 8.5
