If the weather cooperates this evening, baseball gamblers will have a handful of intriguing games to choose from. Justin Verlander looks to continue his dominance of AL hitters in a matchup with the Athletics. Nats ace Patrick Corbin will take on a Twins lineup featuring an abundance of powerful right-handed batters. Below, we peer into the crystal ball to predict what will transpire on the diamonds across America this Thursday, September 12.
Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies O/U 10
Julio Teheran has settled down quite nicely since allowing six earned runs in a little less than a frame of action back on August 15th against the Mets. Unfortunately, Teheran will have to face some of the game’s best hitters tonight when he pitches against the Phillies. Atlanta batters have not seen Drew Smyly’s arsenal as he previously pitched in the American League with the Rangers. However, the Braves are 91-56 for a reason: they have one of the best lineups in baseball. This one should go over.
Pick: Over 10
Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers O/U 10.5
|Tampa Bay Rays||-159|
Rays pitcher Brendan McKay has a 5.03 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. However, the lefty has 48 Ks in less than 40 innings pitched. McKay might not go more than a couple innings tonight unless he is on his A game. Rangers pitcher Kolby Allard has allowed merely three total earned runs in his last three outings. Allard faced the Orioles, Mariners and White Sox in those games so gamblers should not assume he will be able to silence the Rays bats. The Rays lineup is better than the teams Allard has pitched against across the past month and a half. Even though Tampa has solid hitters, the Rangers should be able to match the Rays offensive output as McKay is likely to give up at least a couple runs in three or four innings of work.
Pick: Rangers moneyline
Oakland Athletics at Houston Astros O/U 9
Though Homer Bailey’s stats (a 1.35 WHIP and a 4.87 ERA) do not justify his exorbitant salary, he should not be a +230 underdog in tonight’s matchup as listed by Parx. Bailey is a righty so he might be able to hold Houston’s right-handed dominant lineup to a couple runs. As long as Oakland can score a few runs on Verlander, this game should remain close.
Pick: Athletics run line +1.5 +107
Washington Nationals at Minnesota Twins O/U 9.5
Patrick Corbin has been solid throughout the second half of the season. Though Corbin allowed five earned runs across a mere 5.1 frames against Arizona in early August, the rest of the month and the beginning of September have been smooth sailing. Corbin will face the Twins tonight so there is certainly cause for concern. The fact that Corbin walked six Braves in his last outing is also troubling. Twins pitcher Kyle Gibson has wilted in the past month. Gibson allowed 10 hits and four earned runs in each of his last starts. This stat line is all the more alarming as those starts were against the basement-dwelling Tigers.
Pick: Over 9.5
