With only a couple weeks remaining in the NFL season, this is the time of the year for playoff hopefuls to make their move. In particular, this week’s Thursday night matchup between the Cowboys and Bears is especially important as the Cowboys are in a heated battle for the NFC East crown. Here is a quick look at the best bets of the week.
Dallas Cowboys at Chicago Bears
The Cowboys desperately need a victory yet they can still win the NFC East with a loss to the Bears. The lowly Eagles trail the Cowboys in the East so Dallas might not have as strong of a sense of urgency as some gamblers assume. Dallas should put up 24 points or less against the Bears vaunted defense. Mitch Trubisky threw for 300+ yards last week so it is quite possible he torches the Cowboys weak pass defense. However, two straight solid outings from Trubisky are unlikely.
Pick: Under 42.5
Carolina Panthers at Atlanta Falcons
The 5-6 Falcons are on the verge of falling out of the playoff race. Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen has significantly regressed the past couple of weeks. It is awfully concerning Allen has the third-most dropped potential picks of any NFL quarterback. Though Atlanta is dealing with some injuries to its offensive skill players, they should prevail at home against a squad that recently fired its head coach.
Pick: Falcons moneyline -175
Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills
SugarHouse has the Bills as nearly a touchdown underdog in this home game against the surging Ravens. The Bills are fresh off an upset of the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Both squads are fairly healthy so this should be quite the entertaining game to watch. Look for Baltimore to chew up the clock with its run game, sending the total under 43.5.
Pick: Under 43.5
Washington Redskins at Green Bay Packers
The Packers are clearly one of the better teams in the league as evidenced by SugarHouse’s 12.5 spread that favors the cheeseheads. The Redskins have bounced back after a slow start to the season yet they will struggle to put up points on the frozen tundra against the Pack.
Pick: Under 41.5
San Francisco 49ers at New Orleans Saints
The 49ers are still dealing with numerous injuries on both sides of the ball yet SugarHouse has the Saints as mere 2.5 point favorites. New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees has not missed a beat after returning from thumb surgery. The Saints will roll in this one.
Pick: Saints moneyline -148
Miami Dolphins at New York Jets
The Jets lost last week to the winless Bengals by a score of 22-6. The Dolphins upset the Eagles behind a strong performance by Ryan Fitzpatrick. However, SugarHouse has the over/under for this game set at a lofty 45 as the Dolphins defense is pathetic and this game is in the Meadowlands. Look for the Jets to score 20-27 while the Dolphins put up 14-20, sending this game under the expected total of 45.
Pick: Under 45
Denver Broncos at Houston Texans
The Texans beat the Patriots last week in prime time so they are nearly a 10 point favorite against the Broncos. However, Drew Locke is now in charge of Denver’s offense so the Broncos should be able to keep this game close for at least a couple quarters. Look for Cortland Sutton to go off for 75+ yards and a couple scores, sending this game over the anticipated total.
Pick: Over 42
Los Angeles Chargers at Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars will start Gardner Minshew in place of Nick Foles. However, Minshew did not fare that well in relief of Foles last week. Look for the Chargers to prevail in this road contest simply because they have more talent on the offensive side of the ball. Chargers safeties Derwin James and Adrian Phillips recently returned from injury so the Jags will find moving the ball through the air quite difficult.
Pick: Under 43
Tennessee Titans at Oakland Raiders
The Raiders are sliding out of the playoff race while the Titans are ascending behind the leadership of Ryan Tannehill. Though this is a home game for Oakland, the Titans have all the momentum in the world so they should prevail by 3-7 points.
Pick: Titans moneyline -148
Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots
The Patriots flopped last week against the Texans yet SugarHouse has them as a field goal favorite for this week’s matchup with the Chiefs. Tom Brady was visibly frustrated with his wide receivers in the loss to Houston. However, the Chiefs have not exactly looked the same after injuries to Ty Hill and Patrick Mahomes. This one should go under considering the fact that the Patriots offense is sputtering.
Pick: Under 49
