An exciting first day of play at the 2019 U.S. Open has come to a close. The course at Pebble Beach was a little wet today, which allowed lower scoring than you might be used to seeing at a U.S. Open. Whether that will be the case tomorrow remains to be seen. If the course dries out, expect scores to rise accordingly.
How did the favorites fare in these favorable conditions? Did our underdog picks go lower than anybody expected? Keep reading to find out.
U.S. Open Favorites
Dustin Johnson was the favorite coming into the tournament at odds of +700, according to SugarHouse. He played a decent even par round on Thursday, which leaves him five shots back of the lead. He’s well-placed to make a run on the weekend as long as he has another solid round tomorrow. Dustin Johnson’s odds at SugarHouse are currently +2200, but he’s still very much in contention.
Rory shot an excellent three under par 68 on Thursday, leaving him only two shots back of the lead. Given his extensive major championship success, it’s totally understandable that the sports books have him pegged as an early front-runner. His odds at SugarHouse are currently +800, making him the second favorite. Brooks Koepka is currently the favorite at +750. There’s still a lot of golf left to play over the next three days, but don’t be surprised if Rory is near the top of the leaderboard Sunday afternoon.
U.S. Open Underdogs
Finau didn’t have the best round on Thursday, carding a three over par 74. He’s going to have to play well tomorrow to make the cut, much less get near the lead. If he goes low tomorrow and Saturday, he may yet stand a chance. SugarHouse puts his odds at +20000.
Phil shot a one over par 72 on Thursday. This leaves him six shots back of the leaders at five under. Mickelson certainly didn’t get off to the best start, but he’s not so far back that he has no hope of winning. A good round tomorrow could leave him only a few shots back to start the weekend. Phil is more than capable of going low at that point. His current SugarHouse odds stand at +12500.
